How to start a forex and CFD broker

Starting a forex or CFD broker means securing a licence, connecting liquidity, choosing a trading platform and building a compliant onboarding and payments stack before the first client trades. The regulated route costs more and takes longer, but it is the only one that scales. Owen's portfolio includes NextTrade, an FSC Mauritius-regulated broker, and TradeLocker, the platform more than 20 brokers run on.

FAQs

What licence does a forex broker need?
It depends on where you take clients from. Common starting points are FSC Mauritius, FSCA South Africa, CySEC in the EU and ASIC in Australia, each with different capital requirements and timelines. Operating without a licence limits you to unregulated jurisdictions and cuts you off from serious payment and liquidity partners.
How does a broker make money?
From the spread and commission on every trade, swap fees on positions held overnight, and, in a market-making model, from the net exposure of its client book. A no-dealing-desk broker such as NextTrade passes trades to liquidity providers and earns on the spread and commission only.
What does it cost to start a forex broker?
Regulatory capital is the biggest line and ranges from tens of thousands to millions depending on the licence. Add the platform, liquidity and bridge, a CRM and back office, payment providers, and a compliance team. Budget for at least twelve months of runway before revenue covers costs.
Which trading platform should a new broker choose?
The one your target traders already use. MetaTrader remains the default for retail FX, cTrader for ECN-style brokers, and TradeLocker for brokers that want a modern, web-first platform with TradingView charting and no download. Eightcap, a regulated CFD broker, went live on TradeLocker in 2026.
Can I white-label instead of building?
Yes, and most new brokers should. A white label gives you a platform, liquidity and back office under your brand from day one, so capital goes into licensing and acquisition rather than infrastructure. You give up some margin and control in exchange for speed.
Does Owen help people start brokers?
Owen retired the start-your-own-broker advisory. The guides here are the operating lessons from building one. The offer page points traders to NextTrade and founders to Owen's Capital and AI programmes.
