6 Rules to Set New Year Goals and Build Habits for Long-Term Success

You Have to Do What It Takes to Stay on Top — These Are My 6 Rules for New Year Success

As the New Year begins, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of setting big, bold goals. But the reality? Most people abandon their resolutions within weeks.

Why? Because achieving success isn’t about the goals you set — it’s about the systems and habits you create to reach them.

If you want to stay on top in 2025, you need to rethink your approach. These are my 6 rules for setting goals, creating systems, and sticking to habits that will bring sustained success this year and beyond.

What Does It Mean to Stay on Top?

Achieving success once is hard. But staying on top year after year? That requires a different level of dedication, strategy, and consistency.

The truth is: New Year success isn’t about quick wins. It’s about building habits and systems that make success inevitable. The kind of habits that compound over time and keep you ahead of the competition — long after the New Year hype fades.

I’ve spent years refining my approach to setting goals and sticking to systems that work. And through trial, error, and real-world results, I’ve developed a framework that you can use to achieve long-term growth and stability.

Here are my six rules to set yourself up for success in the New Year — and to make sure you stay at the top.

Getting to the Top: 6 Rules for Setting New Year Goals That Stick (Part 1)

1. Set Goals You Can Control

Here’s the harsh truth: Most people set goals they have no control over.
“I want to lose 10 pounds.”
“I want to make $100,000.”
“I want to grow my audience to 50,000 followers.”

These are outcome-based goals. And while they sound great on paper, they’re hard to achieve because you can’t control every variable.

Instead, set process-based goals — goals that focus on what you can do daily or weekly to move closer to your desired outcomes.
For example:

  • “I will work out 4 times a week.”
  • “I will publish 2 pieces of content per week.”
  • “I will reach out to 10 potential clients every day.”

Process goals keep you focused on the actions that lead to success. And when you control the process, you control the outcome.

2. Build Systems, Not Just Goals

Goals are great for setting direction. But systems are what create results.

A system is a repeatable process you follow consistently, regardless of motivation or circumstances.
Here’s a quick example:

  • Goal: “I want to write a book this year.”
  • System: “I will write for 30 minutes every morning, no matter what.”

The system is what matters. It removes decision fatigue and keeps you on track, even when you don’t feel motivated.
Think of your systems as the engine that drives your success. Without them, your goals are just wishful thinking.

3. Start Small — But Stay Consistent

One of the biggest mistakes people make? Trying to change too much, too fast.

You don’t need a complete life overhaul to achieve your New Year goals. What you need is small, consistent actions.
Why? Because consistency beats intensity every time.

Start with small, manageable habits that fit into your daily life. Then, build on them over time.

  • Instead of “I’ll work out for an hour every day,” start with “I’ll do 10 minutes of exercise daily.”
  • Instead of “I’ll write 1,000 words a day,” start with “I’ll write for 15 minutes.”

When small actions become habits, they compound into massive results.

Staying on Top: 6 Rules for Long-Term Success (Part 2)

Once you’ve set your goals and built your systems, the next challenge is staying on top. Here’s how to ensure your success isn’t a one-time thing.

    4. Track Your Progress — But Focus on the Process

Most people track their outcomes. They weigh themselves every day or obsess over social media analytics.

But here’s a better approach: Track your process, not just your results.

Instead of focusing on the scale, track how many workouts you complete each week.
Instead of obsessing over follower counts, track how many posts you publish or outreach messages you send.

Why? Because you can’t control the outcome, but you can control your actions. And when you track those actions, you’re more likely to stay consistent.

    5. Anticipate Roadblocks and Adjust

No plan is perfect. Life will throw challenges your way.
The key to staying on top? Anticipating those roadblocks — and adjusting your systems accordingly.

    For example:

    • Too busy to hit the gym? Adjust your system to include home workouts.
    • Feeling unmotivated to write? Build a reward system to keep yourself accountable.

The most successful people aren’t those who never face setbacks. They’re the ones who adapt and keep going when things get tough.

    6. Focus on Long-Term Habits, Not Short-Term Motivation

Motivation will come and go. But habits are what last.

If you want to stay on top in 2025, focus on building long-term habits that become second nature.
Think about brushing your teeth. You don’t need motivation to do it — it’s a habit. That’s the goal with your success habits.

The best way to build long-term habits?

    • Start small.
    • Be consistent.
    • Track your progress.
    • Adjust as needed.

When your habits are ingrained, success becomes inevitable.

Final Thoughts: The Importance of Time and Persistence

Here’s the truth about success: It takes time.

Each step — setting your goals, building systems, and staying consistent — requires patience and persistence. There will be setbacks, challenges, and days when you feel like giving up.

But the people who stay on top are the ones who keep going. They adapt, refine their systems, and commit to the process.

So, as you set your New Year goals, remember:

    1. Focus on process-based goals.
    2. Build systems that make success inevitable.
    3. Stay consistent and adaptable.

These six rules form a cycle of success that applies to every area of life — whether you’re building a business, improving your health, or growing your personal brand.
